Calif. Regional Extension Center First in Nation To Sign Up 3,000 Providers

More than 3,000 primary care providers have enrolled in the California Health Information Partnership and Services Organization, Healthcare IT News reports.

CalHIPSO, a regional extension center, is the first REC in the nation to sign up 3,000 health care providers. RECs are designed to help health care providers adopt health IT and are supported by $31.2 million in funding from the 2009 economic stimulus package. There are 62 RECs nationwide.

The federal government has tasked CalHIPSO with helping 6,187 primary care providers achieve meaningful use of EHRs by 2014. Health care providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHRs can qualify for incentive payments under the stimulus package.

CalHIPSO members can receive services through 10 local extension centers in communities across the state (Monegain, Healthcare IT News, 1/12).
